Joan Antkiw, 80, operating room nurse
Joan Frances Antkiw of 104 Blackman Road, a former hospital operating room supervisor, died on Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, at Danbury Hospital. She was 80 years old and the wife of Stephen Antkiw.
Mrs. Antkiw was born in Marietta, Ohio, on July 3, 1921, a daughter of the late Frederick and Marie Trapp Uhrhane. She attended schools in Ohio and graduated from the Flushing (N.Y.) Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse.
After completing postgraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University as an operating room supervision specialist, Mrs. Antkiw became an operating room supervisor at the Alexandria (Va.) Hospital. She also did surgical nursing at Georgetown Universty Hospital. She was also a public health nurse in the District of Columbia and worked with the American Red Cross blood program there.
A Ridgefielder since 1960, Mrs. Antkiw was a volunteer with the Danbury Hospital Auxiliary, American Red Cross blood program and at the Congregation of Notre Dame on West Mountain Road, where a large portion of her free time was spent assisting the nuns.
Mrs. Antkiw was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order of St. Francis and a member of St. Marys Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Phillip Uhrhane of Parkersburg, W.Va.
The Rev. Leszek Szymaszek, parochial vicar, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday morning, Oct. 4, at 10:30 in St. Marys Church.
