Edith Barone, 97, manager, needleworker
Edith Miller Barone of Chancellor Park, 640 Danbury Road, a retired office manager and skilled needlewoman, died on Monday, Dec. 24, at Laurel Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 97 years old and the widow of Salvatore A. Barone.
A native of New York City, Mrs. Barone was born on Jan. 18, 1904, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Pokorny Miller. She attended New York schools and was a retired office manager of an electronics and radio manufacturing company owned and operated by her late husband.
Mrs. Barone had lived in Amityville, Long Island, before moving to Ridgefield 20 years ago.
Mrs. Barone’s interests centered around her family and needlework.
“She was a great needle person,” said Sally B. Brunjes of Ridgefield, her daughter. Mrs. Barone did knitting and crocheting, had taught tatting briefly, and had even done professional monogramming many years ago. “She enjoyed handiwork,” Mrs. Brunjes said.
Mrs. Barone also enjoyed cooking “She was a great soup woman,” her daughter said. “She could make soup out of anything — and it was always very good.”
Mrs. Brunjes described her mother as “a very great lady, very gracious.” Her philosophy was to examine each day: “If she had been kind to people and made them smile, she had had a good day.”
“She also strongly believed she was the matriach, the guiding head of the family,” Mrs. Brunjes said. Her counsel was “very insightful — her advice was very good.”
Besides her Ridgefield daughter, Mrs. Barone is survived by another daughter, Marianne B. Vinhage of Southport; a son, Stephen R. Barone of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren, including Kathyanne Brunjes of Westport, H. Curtis Brunjes of Long Island City, N.Y., and Dr. Karen Brunjes of Ridgefield; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street, at a time to be announced. Friends will be received in the funeral home one hour before the service.
