Barbara Edwards, on American Flight 77

Barbara Edwards, a resident here for many years, was among those who died on American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon in the terrorist hijacking attack on Sept. 11.
Mrs. Edwards was traveling with former Ridgefielders Wilson and Darlene Flagg at the time of the crash (see obituary elsewhere on this page).
Mrs. Edwards, 58, was born in Germany. She moved to Ridgefield with her husband and children in 1974 from Battle Creek, Mich. She was a graduate of Western Michigan University.
For the past four years she had been living in Las Vegas and was a foreign language teacher at Palo Verde High School.
Upon the news of her death, Mrs. Edwards was honored by the Clark County (Nev.) school district which plans to establish a memorial in her name. She was remembered as a popular teacher with a great sense of humor.
Nevada Rep. Shelley Berkley paid tribute to Mrs. Edwards in a speech given before the House of Representatives in Nevada.
She is survived by her sons, Mike of San Diego, Doug of New Jersey and Scott of South Carolina; parents, Jack Vander Baan and Lissy Vander Baan, both of Michigan; sister, Jane Gollan of Bothell, Wash., and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Ivy Hill Road, off Route 102, in Ridgefield.
