Anne Del Biondo Evans, 76, crafter, golfer
Anne Del Biondo Evans, a Ridgefield native, a crafter and the person who hit the first hole-in-one at the towns Dhly Ridge Golf Course, died Thursday, March 29, at Laurel Ridge convalescent center after a long illness. She was 76 years old.
A native of Branchville, Mrs. Evans was born on Feb. 28, 1925, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna De Benigno Del Biondo. She graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1943 and went to work as a bookkeeper for the Character Novelty Manufacturing Company in South Norwalk, which made plush animals for Walt Disney and supplied many of the major department stores. She retired in the 1950s.
Mrs. Evans had a lifelong interest in athletics. She bowled with the Ridgefield Bowling League, was a fine ice skater, and was an active golfer. On Aug. 22, 1974, she became the first person, man or woman, to sink a hole-in-one at Dlhy Ridge, the towns then-new golf course in Ridgebury.
Mrs. Evans was also a skilled crafter whose work won awards and was sold in crafts shows and shops. She specialized in arrangements of tiny flowers in baskets, all fashioned from a mixture of bread, glue and glycerin that resulted in porcelain-like constructions.
She won quite a few ribbons for it, said her sister, Lucy Scala of Ridgefield.
Mrs. Evans also used a similar technique to make dollhouse miniatures.
Her other interests included rock gardening and needlework. She was very adept at sewing, Mrs. Scala said.
Mrs. Evans was very outgoing and friendly, Mrs. Scala added. She was very devoted to her family and to her friends.
Besides her sister, Mrs. Evans is survived by a son, Mark J. Evans of Littleton, Colo; a brother, Anthony J. Del Biondo of Ridgefield; a granddaughter, Jennifer Evans of Littleton; two nieces and two nephews, including Thomas Scala of Fairfield and Gregory Scala of Littleton; and two grandnieces and two grandnephews. Two brothers, Louis and Alfred Del Biondo, and a nephew, David Paul Scala, died before her.
The Rev. M. Joseph Joaquin, pastor, celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown. Burial was in the family plot at St. Marys Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Fairfield County Chapter, 607 Main Street, Norwalk CT 06851.
The Bouton Funeral Home in Georgetown was in charge of arrangements.
