Jesse Lee Methodist Church
For nearly a century, this is what the northern corner of
Main and Catoonah Streets looked like. In 1965, this beautiful Methodist church
was torn down to make way for the boring, brick building that houses stores and
offices today.
What a shame!
In the background, right center, you'll notice the old
parsonage. Fortunately, that was not razed, and still stands today, housing
shops and offices -- a wonderful example of adaptive use of an old house.
In this hand-colored Abertype postcard from the 1920s, Main
Street is to the right and Catoonah Street runs across the front of the card,
just out of view at the bottom.
